Mexico Adventure December 2020!
Tired of winter already? Got cabin fever? Why not plan and reserve your 2020 tropical get-away today! Join fellow members and supporters of the Sauk Prairie Conservation Alliance on a tropical excursion to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico next December 5-13! We have custom-crafted a trip to appeal to nature lovers, bird watchers, and Maya and early Hispanic culture enthusiasts.
Highlights of our excursion include: visits to iconic Maya ruins such as Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum; exploring coastal protected areas including Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve (home of the only breeding population of flamingos in Mexico)and Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve; a swim in a coastal lagoon, a “cenote” (sinkhole) and the Caribbean, if you wish. We’ll also experience life in a typical Maya family home, the Spanish colonial city of Valladolid, the fascinating Alfredo Barrera Marin Botanical Garden and the Xel-Ha archaeological site. We’ll see spectacular wildlife including monkeys, caimans and a whole host of exotic birds including parrots, hummingbirds, trogons, toucanets and possibly the ocellated turkey or rare King Vulture.
Why Mexico, you ask? As you likely know, the Alliance has always taken a community-based approach to conservation. We were successful at securing a “green future” at Badger due to the efforts and commitment of many citizens from the area. We will be visiting sites in Mexico that have also been protected due to community-based efforts, and we will visit two non-profit conservation organizations to learn of their successes and challenges while in the area.
Charlie Luthin, the Alliance’s director, spent many years working with Mexican conservationists on regional conservation initiatives. He is very familiar with the landscape and birdlife of the Yucatan Peninsula. Charlie will join the tour, and we will have a professional bi-lingual guide with us the entire trip. This excursion is being offered in collaboration with Holbrook Travel out of Florida.
We hope you’ll join us next December in Mexico!
