Event: Great Grasslands Excursion

Great Grasslands Excursion

Join volunteers and members of the Sauk Prairie Conservation Alliance for an all-day tour of two large restored grassland/wetland complexes: Nachusa Grasslands in Franklin Grove, Illinois, and the Nygren Wetland Preserve near Rockton Illinois.

The 3,500-acre Nachusa Grasslands preserve, owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, consists of large remnant prairie, woodlands, and wetlands being reconnected through habitat restoration to create one of the largest and most biologically diverse grasslands in Illinois. Wild bison once again roam on the Illinois prairie for the first time in over 200 years. In recent years, bison have been reintroduced at Nachusa and can be viewed from the public roadsides. The bison range across 1,500 acres of rolling land. We’ll learn about the important role the “Friends of Nachusa” play in the restoration and management of the property

The Natural Land Institute is restoring prairies, wetlands and woodlands at its beautiful 720-acre Nygren Wetland Preserve west of Rockton, Illinois, along Raccoon Creek and the Rock and Pecatonica Rivers. We’ll see and hear about the restoration efforts at Nygren by NLI staff.
