Dr. Curt Meine, co-founder of the Alliance and Coordinator, “Badger Apple Corps” Project, will initiate our fall lecture series with a presentation, “The Apple Trees of Badger: A Project Update.” More than 150 apple trees have been located on the Badger Lands in recent years, and many of those pre-date the construction of the Badger Army Ammunition Plant in 1942. They are, therefore, apple trees that survived WWII! For three years the Alliance has hosted grafting workshops to graft tissue from these geriatric apple trees onto fresh new apple rootstock in order to preserve the genetic diversity of the apple trees. The young trees have then been planted into a nursery on land offered by our Badger colleagues at Dairy Forage Research Center. You’ll enjoy a short video about the apple trees and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the trees and create a memorial orchard to commemorate the farmers who lost their land at Badger.
